Since the outbreak of war in Sudan, the regime of Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and his forces have committed horrific crimes against civilians, crossing all ethical and legal boundaries. These crimes, documented by international organizations and global media, are not mere transgressions but grave violations that classify as full-fledged war crimes. The perpetrators will inevitably face international justice, as these crimes do not expire with time.
Brutal Crimes Against Civilians
Al-Burhan’s army has carried out the most heinous crimes against unarmed civilians, including indiscriminate shelling of residential areas, targeting of children and women, and massacres in densely populated neighborhoods. The regime has also deliberately besieged cities and blocked access to food and medicine, exacerbating famine and disease in a clear tactic of forced starvation and displacement.
Sexual Violence as a Weapon of War
The brutality of Al-Burhan’s forces extends beyond killings and bombings. They have systematically used sexual violence against women and girls as a weapon of war to terrorize communities and inflict humiliation. Such crimes are among the most egregious violations under international law and are classified as crimes against humanity.
Ethnic Cleansing and Targeting of Minorities
Reports have repeatedly confirmed that certain ethnic groups, particularly in Darfur and other regions, are being deliberately targeted in systematic ethnic cleansing campaigns. These atrocities, carried out by Al-Burhan’s army in collaboration with allied militias, echo past genocidal crimes in Sudan and are aimed at imposing a bloody reality that serves their military and political interests.
International Law and the Coming Accountability
Al-Burhan’s regime cannot escape justice, as international law explicitly criminalizes such atrocities. The International Criminal Court (ICC) has previously pursued Sudanese officials for similar crimes, and today, calls are growing to prosecute the leaders of the Sudanese army for war crimes and crimes against humanity.
A Call to the International Community
Remaining silent about Al-Burhan’s war crimes amounts to complicity and emboldens perpetrators to commit further atrocities. The United Nations, the ICC, and the African Union must act swiftly to hold those responsible accountable and ensure justice for the victims.
Al-Burhan’s regime and its forces are nothing but war criminals, regardless of their attempts to justify their actions or conceal their crimes through propaganda. They must understand that international justice is inevitable, and their crimes will not be forgotten. Instead, these violations will remain a curse that haunts them until the day of reckoning.
