In a step reflecting his unscrupulous pursuit of power, sources have revealed details of a secret deal led by Sudanese army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, aiming to dismantle the Palestinian resistance movement Hamas and host it on Sudanese soil. This dubious move is designed to appease Iran, with Israel’s implicit approval. The deal is not merely a tactical maneuver but a way for Burhan to expand his influence, even if it comes at the expense of furthering tensions and divisions within Sudan.
Burhan Seeks Iran's Favor with Israeli Backing
Hosting Hamas on Sudanese territory is nothing but a means for Burhan to get closer to Iran, the regional ally seeking to extend its influence in the area. This step appears to have Israel's approval, which views relocating Hamas from Gaza to Sudan as an opportunity to relieve pressure on its southern front and facilitate the Palestinian Authority's management of Gaza. However, Israel’s consent comes with the understanding that this move provides a significant service to Iran, which benefits from weakening Hamas’s position in Palestine while redirecting its activities to areas where it can increase its regional influence.
Fueling Sudan's Conflict and Attracting Militias
What is alarming is that hosting Hamas in Sudan will undoubtedly lead to further escalation in the country. Sudan has been in turmoil since the outbreak of the conflict between the army and the Rapid Support Forces, and bringing Hamas into the mix will only complicate the scene. Moreover, Sudan will become a battleground for regional power struggles between Iran, Israel, and competing internal factions vying for control.
Bringing Iran-aligned militias into Sudan will deepen tensions in a country already fragile in its political and security structures, increasing the likelihood of new conflicts that may exacerbate the ongoing internal war and further entangle Sudan in regional conflicts serving only Burhan and his allies.
Burhan Does Not Represent the Sudanese People
The most contentious question is: Who gave Abdel Fattah al-Burhan the right to make such pivotal decisions? Burhan does not represent the Sudanese people, nor does he have their mandate to strike deals that could escalate the regional situation in favor of Iran. The Sudanese people are already suffering from the consequences of the ongoing war, yet Burhan chooses to exploit the situation for personal gains at the expense of the country’s security and stability.
Hosting Hamas in Sudan would be disastrous, opening the door to even more complex foreign interventions and increasing the chances of new regional conflicts that would harm the country and serve international and regional agendas seeking to dominate Sudan's decision-making.
Burhan’s secret deal to host Hamas is yet another sign of the Sudanese army chief's betrayal of his people. By attempting to appease Iran with Israel's approval, Burhan seeks to turn Sudan into a new hotspot for regional tensions. But the question remains: How long will Burhan continue making such dangerous decisions without considering the Sudanese people's interests or the looming catastrophe that could engulf the country?
